1) Preface

Dear Alumnis,

It took a while since I wrote the last newsletter. Since then a lot has been done:

We, mainly Bernd, created a new website and worked on several databases. An intensive discussion with the BoE took place. The next annual Alumni meeting is already fixed and soon to be happen.
Due to this a new Newsletter was overdue and therefore it is a bit larger than usual...

Still I ask everyone to contribute to EGEA and EGEA Alumni – it´s worth it!

Karsten Schacht

Interim Chairman of EGEA Alumni

2) NEW website for EGEA Alumni - http://egea-alumni.eu

Since a few weeks the new alumni-page exists. Credits and a big THANK YOU to BERND for starting and working on the new platform! It is more flexible and fits more to our needs since the old forum reached its limits.

New features:

- to get full access to the forum you have to be acknowledged by 3 other already registered Alumnis - this avoids misusing the forum and prevention from SPAM ect..

- job database implementation

- more flexible implementation of further tools for registration and online voting

Feel free to register and develop the website by lively discussions and constructive inputs: http://egea-alumni.eu

4) EGEA and EGEA Alumni

During the last half year an intensive discussion about the status of EGEA Alumni took place:
It began with the requested vision of the current EGEA BoE about the implementation of EGEA, which has been modified during a workshop at this years EuroMed-Congress in Serbia (see attachments A & B). Due to this outcome the BoE is supposed the change the official protocol like you can see in the attachment C.

Finally we had a common Skype-meeting with the BoE of EGEA in the mid of June. It has been stated that the BoE does not support any acknowledgment of the group of EGEA Alumni of being a regular entity. It even does not see Alumni as a body inside the umbrella-organisation of EGEA. EGEA Alumni is supposed to be seen as an organisation beside EGEA.

Knowing that the aim of EGEA Alumni, when it was officially created 2005, was to support EGEA implemented in the structure of the organisation. These results are to be interpretatet critically. But obvious is, that this might be a new possibility and forces us to create a new position and appearance with new visions for the benefit of whole EGEA.

Further discussion is welcome on our new website and during the EGEA Alumni weekend.

5) Open Call for Volunteers for the new Board of EGEA Alumni

Due to the fact that we would like to elect a new and official EGEA Alumni board we would like to open an open call for volunteers. Following positions need to be find a new possessor: Chairman/-woman, Vice-Chairman/-Woman, Secretary, Treasurer.

An online election tool is going to be prepared on our new webpage (http://egea-alumni.eu). We would like to elect a new board till the upcoming EGEA Alumni weekend.

Volunteers are pleased to send a short notification and introduction about themselves to: alumni@egea.eu.

-----

6) Senior Advisory Commission (SAC)

The BoE of EGEA plans to create a new body: The Senior Advisory Commission (SAC - see attachment D) consisting out of experienced persons (ex-BoE or Alumnis e.g.). There will be up to 2 or 3 places reserved for people from our EGEA Alumni group. It should act as a supervisor and should assist the BoE in a consulting way.

People who are interested to engage themselves in this new body are asked to send a message with a short introduction about themselves to alumni@egea.eu and egea@egea.eu. I would kindly like to ask anyone of the more experienced Alumnis to consider this!

7) EGEA Annual Congress 2009

This years EGEA Annual Congress is going to be held from the 27th of September till the 2nd of October 2009 in Heeg, located in the Frysian Lake district in the Netherlands. It is going to be organised by the people from EGEA Groningen. We have received 3 places for it for people from the group of Alumni. By priority the first 2 are going to be reserved for people from the new board of EGEA Alumni, the third place will be set by lot out of four further applications. Registration has already closed.

10) External Online Survey: Harmonisation of Geodata
(Florian Fischer / EGEA Alumni München)

Are you working in the domain of Nature and Environmental Protection?

The NatureSDIplus network looks for participants for an Online-Survey! The harmonisation of geodata is a central topic in the domain of nature protection. If you are working in nature protection, environmental protection or with geodata about biotopes, habitats, biogeographically regions and protected areas, I would like to ask you to participate in this online survey about your user requirements:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/NatureSDI_UserSurvey

The research project NatureSDIplus is an e-Contentplus initiative of the EU (http://www.nature-sdi.eu). Its aim is to build up a network of knowledge about the harmonisation of geodata in the domain of nature protection in order to inform and support the EU's INSPIRE Initiative. One step is to gather knowledge about the user requirements. Thus we need you!

On behalf of the Institute for Geographic Information Science in Salzburg

Florian Fischer

(Alumni EGEA Munich)
